Quick CHM

Features

Quick CHM Dialog

When Quick CHM starts, the following dialog is presented, with three rows of button options to choose from.

Quick CHM Dialog

This is the main dialog and from here all subsequent development will occur. As individual actions are selected, this dialog will be replaced with that of the selected action. When that action is completed this main dialog will reappear.

Pressing the F1 key will bring up this help file for assistance.

If you see a "Register" button on the dialog, this is a reminder that you have not yet registered your product. Clicking on the button will bring up a dialog on how to register.

Quick CHM Projects Dialog

Projects
The first row of button options is the Projects Buttons

Project Buttons

Here you can:

  • add new Projects,
  • edit Projects,
  • delete Projects or
  • open the selected Projects for editing or building.

Add -Edit buttons

If you selected "Add" or "Edit", this will bring you to the Project Settings dialog.

Project Settings Dialog

In this dialog you can:

  • Create or modify the name and the description for the project.
  • Set the location of the folder which contains the html files.
  • Identify the html file which will be the start page.
Delete button

If you selected "Delete", you will receive a confirmation request to verify your selection.

All Settings information is saved into an XML file in the same folder Quick CHM was installed. This file can be manually edited if desired.

Quick CHM Files Dialog

Project Files
The Second row of button options is the Project Files Buttons

Project File Buttons

With these buttons you can:

  • Create a project file "[ProjectName].hhp".
  • Create a table of contents file "[ProjectName].hhc".
  • Create an index file "Index.hhk".

Project button

This is the first file to create. When you selected the "Project" button, Quick CHM will look to see if a [ProjectName],hhp file already exists. If it does not exist, then one will be created. If it does exist the file will be displayed in Notepad. To create a different [ProjectName].hhp file, you must delete or rename the existing one.

Contents button

If you selected the "Contents" button, this will bring you to the Table Of Contents dialog.

Table Of Contents Dialog

In this dialog you can:

  • Alter the structure of the Table of Contents by moving items to higher or lower positions in the tree. You can also add items or remove them.
  • Build the new Table of Contents
  • View/Edit the Table of Contents file in either, your Editor or Notepad, or HTML Help Workshop.

When you work with the Table of Contents structure, each child node of the tree will contain two elements. The first is a lable, the second is the file name which will be displayed when that node is clicked. They are separated by the double hyphen delimeter. Summary nodes do not have a file association. It is necessary to retain the file name while working with the tree structure. Both the lable and the file name can be changed but they are both required. The file name does not include any path information. The necessary path information will be derived from the previously created project file.

Index button

If you selected the "Index" button, this will bring you to the Index dialog.

Index Dialog

In this dialog you can:

  • Modify the contents of the index listing.
  • Build the new Index
  • View/Edit the Index file in either, your Editor or Notepad, or HTML Help Workshop.
  • Modify the minimum word length.
  • Modify the search pattern for eligible words, using a Regular Expression pattern.

The initial question from the Index button selection will be if you want to scan for a new list of words. If yes, the application will generate a new word listing from the html files found. The minimum word length used will be three characters. If you answer no, you will see a blank listing and be able to add your own words.

Once generated and viewable, you will be able to edit, delete, or add words. The mouse actions required to perform these modifications are stated on the dialog box, but to emphasize, these are mouse-activated actions. For example: to edit a value in a cell, you would double-click that cell with the left-mouse button. Also, please note, when you add your own words you will need to know the name of the file in which the word is to be found.

Once the word listing is finalized you can build the [ProjectName].hhk file and subsequently view or edit it from either Notepad or HTML Help Workshop.

Quick CHM Build Dialog

Build Project Help File
The Third row of button options is the Build Project Help File button

Project Build Button

With this button you can:

  • Create the project file "[ProjectName].chm".
